My friend called me really upset the other day. She just found out she has herpes and was freaking out. I didn’t know what to say or to do to calm her down. What can I say? Apparently it’s normal for people to go through depression, suicidal tendencies, isolation. You wonder who you got it from, do they know they have it, did you give it to anyone… I wish there was a way that I could help her. I wish I lived closer so that I could just give her a hug when she is feeling down.

Wow. That would be a tough thing to find out. Hopefully she can come to terms with that because she's going to have it for the rest of her life.

One my friend's friends contracted H in college. After the initial shock and she's been fine. She dates regularly and has never been denied sex despite telling every partner the truth about her sexual history. Go figure.

STDs freak me the hell out.

Another friend of mine recently told me his best friend contracted H from wife. The capper was he knew beforehand that she had it but figured since they'd be married 'til death do us part that it was not a big deal. Yes, you guessed it they're divorced now and he's bitter about contracting an STD from her.

I don't think there's anything you can say other than "are you okay?"
